The short answer
A professionally fastened tarp can keep water out for up to about 90 days in a best-case install. In Lakeland and the rest of Polk County, sun and afternoon wind usually chew through that sooner. Plan the emergency roof repair or the roof leak repair while the plastic is still tight.
A store-bought blue tarp thrown over a ridge with a few bricks is not the same job. Those tear at the first gust and dump water into the attic.
What kills a tarp in Central Florida
Sun. UV cooks polyethylene. The sheet gets brittle and splits at the folds.
Wind. Uplift gets under a loose edge and sails the whole cover. That is how a “covered” roof is open again by morning.
Ponding. A sag in the middle holds water. Weight stretches the sheet and pulls fasteners.
The hole under it. If the deck is soft, the tarp follows the sag. You still need the wood checked.

We measure the opening, not just throw plastic over the ridge. Fasteners go into sound wood. Edges get sealed so wind cannot get under. You get a written price for the tarp before we climb, and photos of the damage for your file.
